 CLASSES AND PROGRAMS
 

For the 2021-2022 school year, ACVI maintains:

  • 1 Practical Learning Program class (PLP) - max. 10 students

  • 2 School Support Programs classes (SSP) - max. 12 students

  • 1 Transition to Work Program (TWP) - max. 12 students

  • Gifted Program

  • Academic Resource Support

 HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN HIGH SCHOOL
 
  • Regular attendance is key (both in person and on-line)

  • Use supports available - subject teachers, SERT/Small Class Teachers, Educational Assistants (EAs), Academic Resource Room or Virtual Hub

  • Use agenda/Google Classroom to track assignments, due dates, to communicate between home and school, etc.

  • Access accommodations on your IEP

  • Use your Advanced Technology (Laptops, Chromebooks)

  • Self-advocacy - ask for help when you need it

 ACCOMMODATIONS FOR ALL NON-GIFTED STUDENTS WITH IEPS
 
  • Instructional, Environmental and Assessment accommodations

  • Specific to the student's needs as outined in their academic/clinical assessment data

Common to all Non-Gifted/ME Gifted + other ID Students:

  • Extra time for tests, exams and EQAO assessments (Math grade 9, Literacy/OSSLT grade10)

 GIFTED STUDENTS
 
  • SERT contacts - Ms. Eenling / Mr. Hunter

  • Gifted Certificate available for students who earn 8 Gifted credits, one being at the senior level (Grade 11 Math or English)

  • Grade 9 and 10 - four credits per year - placement is Special Education Class with Partial Integration

  • Grade 11 - two credits per year - placement is Regular Class with Withdrawal Assistance

  • Grade 12 - no Gifted courses - placement is Regular Class with Indirect Support

 BENEFITS OF ACADEMIC RESOURCE SUPPORT FOR MAINSTREAM IEP STUDENTS
 
  • SERT assigned to each student - responsible for writing IEP and preparing for IPRC meetings

  • Liaison for parents and the school

  • In-school contact for the student

  • Knows the student's needs and assists teaching staff with providing accommodations

 PURPOSE OF GLE CLASS FOR SSP CLASS STUDENTS
 
  • Home base for students - one period per day for Quadmester One

  • Consistent staff for students while enrolled in small class coded courses (courses ending in "S")

  • Access to Academic Resource Support for integrated subjects, if needed

 EXPECTATIONS OF MAINSTREAM STUDENTS
 
  • Students will choose courses at the appropriate level for success (Essential/Workplace, Applied/College, Academic/University, Gifted) - courses needing modification will be at the Essential level only

  • Homework will be completed on time (use AR room support to do this)

  • Regular attendance is essential - if you miss school you are still responsible to complete the work

ACADEMIC RESOURCE Virtual Learning Hub:

Students must join the AR VIRTUAL LEARNING HUB GOOGLE CLASSROOM:

Class code: ertezzp

They can then access the Google Meet code within the classroom. Only DDSB accounts are accepted.

Students will be able to access an EA online during the school day for extra assistance.

MENTAL HEALTH
 

Durham District School Board (DDSB) considers well-being and positive mental health fundamental to student achievement. Students and/or their caregivers are encouraged to reach out to someone at school if they are feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. Support and Crisis Lines are also available.
